Save Your Hair From Heat Damage With This Innovative Multi-Tasking Tool

How the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler uses science and technology to deliver flawless results for every hair type.

If you regularly use a super-hot blow-dryer, straightener or curling iron, your locks have likely suffered some noticeable damage. Extreme heat can cause multiple hair issues, including loss of shine, breakage and split ends. You’re not alone in your struggles: Dyson’s 2022 Global Hair Science Study found that the hair dryer is the most common hair tool used across the globe, and 65 per cent of Canadians say that their hair is damaged. The good news is that the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler, with its re-engineered attachments and enhanced airflow, can help you achieve a salon-worthy blowout at home without causing heat damage.

How traditional hot tools work

Changing hair texture—adding curls, straightening, smoothing frizz—requires temporarily breaking and resetting the hydrogen bonds in your hair using water or heat. Traditional hairstyling tools use very high temperatures to break and reset these bonds to create styles and dry hair. But what most people don’t realize is that over time, that heat can create irreversible damage, especially when it comes to loss of strength and elasticity. “As soon as the elasticity is gone, hair looks dry, drab and dull,” says celebrity hairstylist and Dyson global styling ambassador Matthew Collins.

Styling from wet to dry means the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler doesn’t need to rely on extreme heat to set your hair into its desired shape. “If we keep the temperature below 150 C (or 300 F), we’re in the safe zone,” says Anna Robb, senior design engineer at Dyson. That’s why the Airwrap uses intelligent heat control to calculate the temperature 40 times per second, ensuring that the heat output never rises above 150 degrees, while still locking in amazing style.

Dyson’s hair-friendly technology

The coolest feature of the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler is the innovative use of the aerodynamic phenomenon called the Coanda effect. Powered by Dyson’s digital V9 motor, the Coanda airflow dries, curls, shapes and smooths hair without extreme heat. Think of it this way, Robb says: when you’re pouring water out of a glass and the fluid dribbles down the side, it’s because that fluid wants to attach to that surface. The same happens with hair and the Airwrap—strands are attracted to the curvature of the barrel. The result is smooth, shiny locks without fly-aways.

“At Dyson, there is an obsession with perfection,” Collins says. Last year, the company committed over half a billion GBP to expand and accelerate research and technology development across its beauty portfolio. “We try to reinvent every category we enter,” Robb says. Dyson uses state-of-the-art equipment (including microscopes, thermal cameras and airflow laser smoke machines) to help engineers better understand different hair types, the impact of hair damage and the effects of high-speed airflow. The company also conducts extensive user trials to see how people respond to the technology as it’s being developed.

A few other improvements also make the latest model of the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler a must-have. The new brush attachments automatically change direction when you switch sides of your head, so their airflow always projects downwards to align with your hair cuticle and reduce frizz. And the new multi-directional Airwrap barrels allow you to create bouncy curls and waves in both directions with a quick twist of the cool tip. “We want to really empower people to be able to personalize the tool to suit their styling needs,” Robb says. Plus, the ergonomic controls make the Airwrap easy and comfortable to use so you’re not straining your arms.

Recently, Robb has been focused on developing attachments that make Dyson’s haircare machines more versatile for all hair types. This fall, a new large round volumizing brush and precision-engineered diffuser for the Airwrap will launch in Canada, delivering more versatility for longer hair, and waves, curls and coils of any length. These soon-to-be-fan-favourite attachments will be available for purchase separately or as part of the new Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler Complete Long Diffuse, a set specifically created for wavy, curly and coily hair. Whether you want to rough-dry, straighten or create voluminous curls and waves, the Airwrap can help. It eliminates the need to have lots of different hair tools, says Robb.
