Selena Gomez has opened up about her plans to start a family, revealing that she isn’t able to carry her own children.
The singer, actress, and beauty entrepreneur got candid about her health struggles in a new interview with Vanity Fair, sharing that she isn’t able to carry a pregnancy to term naturally.
“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” she shared.
“I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”
Gomez has been very open about her battle with lupus, an incurable autoimmune disease that can an affect the joints, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs. In 2017, she underwent a kidney transplant as a result of lupus-related organ damage.
She has also been candid in her diagnosis with bipolar disorder, revealing back in 2022 that the medications she take to treat the illness could impact her ability to have a safe pregnancy. Speaking to Rolling Stone at the time, Gomez described the possibility that the medications could inhibit her ability to carry a child as “a very big, big, present thing in my life, “ adding that “however I’m meant to have [children], I will.”
It’s not the first time Gomez has delved into her plans to start a family — however unconventionall that may be. Speaking to Time in May, 2024 she revealed that until recently, she had considered having children alone.
“I was alone for five years, and I got really used to it. A lot of people are afraid of being alone and I probably tortured myself in my head for like two years being alone, and then I kind of accepted it,” she said.
“I was going to adopt at 35 if I had not met anyone.”
Of course, it seems these plans have likely since changed, with Gomez, now 31, recently going public with boyfriend Benny Blanco, 36.
“I just cherish every moment with him. I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that he’s not going anywhere any time soon,” she shared in the interview.
For his part, Blanco, a music producer, has been even more vocal about his plans to start a family with Gomez.
Per Page Six, earlier in May, Blanco told Howard Stern that he had already told Gomez that he wants to have kids with her.
“It’s always a topic of conversation to me every day,” he said. “That’s my next goal, to check the box. I have a ton of god-kids; I’ve got a ton of nephews. I love being around kids.”
And absolutely melting our hearts, Blanco added, “I just know that when I look at her, I just say, ‘I don’t know a world where it could be better than this.’ That’s what I always say to her.”
Talk of kids comes shortly after Gomez’s most famous ex, Justin Bieber, welcomed his first child, Jack Blues, with wife Hailey Bieber. And while some corners of the internet have tried to dredge up drama between this infamous trio – particularly in the wake of this news – we’re just glad they all seem content in their new relationships.
