Taylor Swift’s $900,000 Six-Stone VMAs Ring Has A Hidden Meaning

Taylor Swift debuted a striking new look at the 2026 MTV VMAs, pairing a surprisingly minimalist Tamara Ralph couture gown and a sleek bob. And while her body-con gown may have turned heads, it was the decidedly more maximalist ring on her finger that drew our eyes. Swift was wearing what we’ve identified as a 10.3-carat diamond ring by Forever Diamonds New York, which featured six centre stones in six different cuts. This count immediately set off alarm bells because we all know Swift never does anything by accident, and we’ve long been fascinated by Taylor Swift’s jewellery (hello, her old mine-cut diamond engagement ring). So, we decided to take a deep dive into this breathtakingly unique design. From key features like cut and setting to potential easter eggs hidden in plain site, we sat down with expert jewellers to dissect every detail. There was a lot to discuss.

What Cut Is Taylor Swift’s Diamond Ring?

Speaking exclusively with ELLE Australia, Roman Malayev, Founder & CEO of Forever Diamonds jewellery, explained that Swift’s ring was comprised of six unique stones rather than focusing on one dominant stone. “The Royale brings together six distinct centre stones: a pear, heart, ozenge, ashoka, marquise and oval,” explains Malayev. “The design showcases some of the most sought-after diamond shapes of the moment.” The piece, which moves with Swift’s hand, is carefully balanced. “Every stone is strategically placed to create balance across the piece; the heart and pear, for example, are connected and positioned to play off each other.”

Toya Worsley, founder of Lindelli, notes these distinct choices speak to where fine jewellery design is headed. “Interesting cuts are certainly having a moment,” Worsley explains. “There’s a growing appreciation for diamonds with unique character: distinctive proportions, unusual faceting, and the individuality of antique cuts. This band captures the appeal of pairing that character with an imaginative setting. It feels personal and considered, with details that invite a closer look.”

Worlsey adds that while exact gemological grades can’t be confirmed in red carpet photographs, the personality of the stones shines through regardless. “It would be reasonable to expect carefully selected diamonds in a piece like this,” she says. “What interests me is whether a warmer diamond colour was selected. Warmth can be particularly beautiful in antique cuts, and yellow gold complements that character wonderfully. The appeal is the personality of the stones as much as their grading.”

For founder and CEO Roman Malayev, creating something that felt different from a traditional diamond ring was exactly the point.

“With The Royale, we wanted to push ourselves creatively and bring together exceptional stones, craftsmanship and unexpected design in a way we hadn’t done before,” Malayev says. “It’s bold, it has presence, and it makes you feel something the moment you put it on. To me, that’s what great jewellery should do.”

While the six-stone design wasn’t custom-made for Swift, her decision to select it herself adds some typically Swiftian symbolism to her appearance at the VMAs — but we’ll get to that later.

How Many Carats Is Taylor Swift’s VMAs Diamond Ring?

At ELLE, we cover fine jewellery and engagement rings a lot, so we’re familiar with lofty carat counts. But even for a pop superstar, Swift’s ring is staggering.

The six centre stones account for 9.57 carats, while another 0.73 carats of pavé diamonds are set into the bands. Unlike the enormous solitaire diamonds we’re accustomed to seeing on engagement rings, however, the carat weight is spread across the finger. This way, each of the six stones has a moment to shine.

It also makes the ring feel decidedly less bridal, which makes sense given it wasn’t designed as an engagement ring. Instead, the different cuts and double-band setting give it the feel of an unapologetic statement piece.

What Is The Setting Of Taylor Swift’s VMAs Six-Stone Ring?

Brett Afshar, founder and CEO of jeweller Queensmith, says the two-band setting is key to the overall design.

“The thicker band appears to measure approximately 3mm, complemented by a finer upper band of around 1.75mm, creating a layered and delicate finish while allowing the statement stones to remain the focus,” he says.

“The band has a lovely softness to it,” observes Worsley. “The diamonds appear quite subdued in photographs, which gives the piece an understated, romantic character. What strikes me most is the balance between the individual stones and the delicacy of the setting.”

Tarick K’Dor, founder of K’Dor, notes that the modern setting enhances the piece’s ethereal feel. “Having the different cuts running down the finger creates the illusion of floating diamonds, with the claws strategically placed to protect their corners,” he explains. K’Dor adds that the settings are subtly hinged, ensuring the ring has flexibility for effortless movement and wear.”

This level of craftsmanship Worlsey points out, is crucial to the ring’s visual lightness. “What stands out to me is the fineness of the bezel setting,” Worsley explains. “There appears to be just a delicate rim of gold around each diamond, defining its shape without visually overwhelming it. Achieving balance requires precision: the setting needs to secure the stone while retaining that lightness. It gives the band a beautifully soft, scalloped outline.”

Naturally, our question is what could the price of a 10.3 carat diamond ring “ring into?” Forever Diamonds hasn’t disclosed the price of The Royale, and much of its value comes down to the specifications of the individual stones. Afshar, however, estimates that a natural-diamond version could comfortably exceed £500,000.

“If the stones are natural diamonds, we estimate the ring could be valued at well over £500,000, while a comparable lab-grown version could be around £42,000, depending on the exact specifications, colour, clarity and quality of the stones,” he says.

Converted to Australian dollars, that puts his estimate at approximately $944,257 if the diamonds are natural. So, presumably not an impulse purchase.

Is There A Special Meaning Behind Taylor Swift’s Six-Diamond Ring?

A six-stone ring is an interesting choice for Swift. The masters for her first six albums (Taylor Swift through to Reputation) were sold in 2019, sparking a years-long battle that ended when she finally bought them back in May 2025. She wrote about this experience in folklore when she wrote “my tears ricochet“. In the song she sings:

We gather stones, never knowing what they’ll mean

Some to throw, some to make a diamond ring

This is Swift’s first MTV VMAs since she bought back her masters and seemingly closed a chapter on her professional life with The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. Her look also had ties to her Reputation-era, her sixth studio album, famous for its serpent motif, which was echoed in the winding silhouette of her Tamara Ralph gown, which peeled back in a silver cascade like a snake shedding its skin. In this context, the choice of six diamonds for six masters feels less like an aesthetic coincidence, and more like the sparkling sign-off on a victory lap.
