Taylor Swift’s Wedding Hasn’t Happened Yet And I’m Already Exhausted

I’d like the record to show that I am a shameless romantic. I love love. So much so that my husband and I have been married three times: once privately, once surrounded by family and friends, and a third time in the Tunnel of Love in Las Vegas (sadly, we didn’t spring for the Elvis officiant but it was still incredibly special nonetheless). But after 11 years in the media industry, and with many of those spent covering the ins and outs of Taylor Swift‘s professional and love lives, the news surrounding her wedding has officially tired me out.

It’s been confirmed this morning that Taylor Swift and her tight end fiancé Travis Kelce are officially getting married this weekend at Madison Square Garden in New York City, according to AP News. This follows a cheeky comment from the city’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani a couple of weeks ago, saying “We are fully prepared… There isn’t anything to share beyond that.”

And the only emotion I can muster is relief that it’s all about to be over.

Before the Swifties come for me, it should be known that I’m a fan of the artist. I’ve listened to (and enjoyed) most of her albums, I wore a sparkling beaded dress to The Eras Tour and the opening notes of ‘Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince’ still send goosebumps along my skin any time I hear it. It was quite honestly one of the best nights of 2024 for me, which is no small achievement when you consider that two of those aforementioned three weddings were in that very same year. I’m even listening to The Eras Tour playlist on Spotify as I write this to get me into the mood.

When the pair’s engagement was announced in 2025 and photos emerged of Kelce down on one knee and surrounded by a lush rose garden as he presented her with her vintage diamond engagement ring, I was thrilled for Swift. As an artist who has spent almost two decades sharing the ups and downs of her love life through emotional song writing, I felt she really deserves the happiness. When she dropped her album The Life of a Showgirl a few months later and sung jaunty tunes about their love (and, ahem, love life), I was thrilled for her.

But fast forwarding to July 2026 and with the news that Swift and Kelce are set to wed this weekend… all I feel is a deep sense of exhaustion. I think, in fact I know, the turning point was the venue choice. Any Swiftie, prior to last month, would have guessed that she would host a wedding in a whimsical location, and most likely close to her seaside estate in Watch Hill, Westerly, Rhode Island. The estate is a sprawling 11,000-square-foot home that Swift has owned since 2013, and it’s been the location of many the July 4 parties over the years. It’s set up on a hill overlooking the water and has the precise romantic ruggedness that would suit Swift’s wedding.

And until a month or so ago, it was reported that the wedding would take place in that location. Apparently though, the pair pivoted to New York City when Swift’s security team determined that hosting the wedding in Rhode Island was just too difficult from a security standpoint. “Everything was being planned in Rhode Island,” a source reportedly told Us Weekly. “And so many people wanted to come that plans had to change because it became bigger.”

Now, the concept of a New York City wedding is actually peak romance in my eyes, with a city wedding screaming chic, chic, chic. But finding out the the biggest celebrity in the world had selected an arena where basketball and hockey games are played as their venue just falls a bit flat. That’s even despite the many random reports this week that everything from a rose garden, to realistic lighting to make it look like there’s natural light (because there’s literally none as MSG), to a castle installation and a literal red carpet is being rolled out for the event.

Suddenly, what was set to be one of the sweeter, though no less lavish, weddings of the year is more likely to be a concert that leans into being an out there spectacle than a big love-fest. And it has me thoroughly underwhelmed. It’s not my wedding, so really mustering a strong reaction is tough anyway, but as a lover of celebrity culture, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit disappointed.

I totally understand why they’ve made the decision. Security is the top priority, and Madison Square Garden is a closed venue that’s well-versed with keeping out people who aren’t permitted to attend events. There’s also the privacy of it all. Swift and Kelce are entitled to not have drones flying over their ceremony and reception, like they were for her friend (and rumoured bridesmaid) Selena Gomez’s wedding last September. And the couple shouldn’t have to compromise on the guest list or scale because we’re all nosy enough to want a look inside.

But the idea of the world’s biggest romantic, Taylor Alison Swift, getting married to the love of her life in a venue that kind of smells like sweat is honestly just bumming me out. Will Kelce also be singing ‘Viva Las Vegas’ at the top of his lungs into a microphone? Will it be more like a concert? As Amy Odell (author of best-selling memoirs, Anna [Wintour] and Gwyneth [Paltrow]) put it so aptly on her Instagram Stories today, the only image I can conjure about the schedule is: “1pm – guests arrive, enjoy refreshing hot pretzels and large Pepsis. 2pm – ceremony starts, concludes with celebratory firing of t-shirt guns”.

Over the years, Swift has sung about her “Romeo” proposing to her, about taking “this magnetic force of a man to be my lover”, and about liking “shiny things” but being happy to “marry you with paper rings”. Though these songs weren’t written about Kelce, they do point to her wanting a romantic wedding. Other rumours floating around the past couple of weeks is that she and Kelce have already tied the knot in an intimate ceremony and their MSG event will be more of a post-wedding celebration. Personally, I’m hoping that’s the case and that she had her romantic moment. And yes, I hope she posts about it at some point but I also have respect for her decision to perhaps not.

I also love the idea that she’s trying to throw us off the scent with MSG and is hosting it at a totally different location, I’ll be right back on board. I guess, if Swift is happy, I’m happy.
