THE RUNDOWN
- The 2027 Met Gala will be taking place on May 3, 2027 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
- After controversy following the announced John Galliano exhibit a newly announced theme “extraOrdinary: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday” has been confirmed by head curator Andrew Bolton.
- The theme will be split into two categories, elevation of everyday staple items like jeans and white T-shirts and reusable materials like disposable plastic and aluminium.
- Pieces confirmed and rumoured for exhibit include breastplate dresses from Jonathan Anderson’s tenure at Loewe, Matthieu Blazy’s l’œil nubuck leather tank and jeans look from his Fall 2022 collection for Bottega Veneta, Undercover’s T-shirt dress worn by Doja Cat at the 2024 Gala and archival pieces like the 1992 Comme des Garçons paper dress.
After a tumultuous few months that saw public pushback cancel its planned John Galliano retrospective, the Costume Institute has officially pivoted. The 2027 Met Gala theme is here, and it’s trading high-camp fantasy for high-fashion reality.
The theme? “ExtraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.” Unveiled by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the upcoming exhibition is likely intended to be a controversy-free palate cleanser, paring back the glamour to examine the artistry behind our everyday wardrobes. Curated by Andrew Bolton alongside Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben, the showcase will challenge how we view the clothes we live in.

To pull this off, the exhibition will be split into two distinct pillars. The first will explore how luxury designers continually reinvent beloved basics — jeans, trench coats, and the humble white T-shirt. The second section will shine a light on garments constructed from disposable, everyday materials like paper, plastic, and aluminium.
While “ordinary” might sound like a surprisingly subdued dress code for the First Monday in May, there is hope for some intriguing efforts. The full list of pieces in the collection remains under wraps, but a few standout inclusions have been mentioned and give a clear picture of how the theme might come to life.
Inside the “Familiar Forms” room, the humble wardrobe basic gets the trompe l’œil treatment courtesy of current Chanel creative director Matthieu Blazy. The exhibition will feature a standout look from his Fall 2022 Bottega Veneta debut that perfectly captures the theme’s essence. While it presents as a simple ribbed tank top and casual blue jeans, the garments are an illusion — meticulously crafted from supple nubuck leather that was dyed and printed to replicate the look and drape of two staple pieces.

In the “Common Matter” gallery, the focus on disposable materials will bring some beloved moments of fashion history into the spotlight. A delicate paper dress from Comme des Garçons’ Spring 1992 ready-to-wear collection is confirmed to make an appearance, alongside a striking silverware bodice from Maison Margiela’s upcoming Spring 2027 collection and moments from Jonathan Anderson‘s tenure at Loewe. Bolton told Vogue that the new concept came after careful consideration.
“I didn’t have a plan B,” Bolton told the publication. “It was really important to come up with an exhibition that wasn’t just a masterwork show or something that we could do a little bit more easily. I wanted it to be as challenging and as provocative and as beautiful as a John show would have been.”
Met Gala will take place on May 3, 2027, in New York City so we’ll be waiting until then to see how celebrities interpret the brief.
