The humble baseball cap, in the hands of our biggest celebrities, becomes a wildly mutable object. It’s a disguise—but a terrible one. It’s a humanizing touch—but one that nonetheless enlarges the gulf between a star and regular civilians. It’s—in one particularly trenchant, DiCaprio-shaped example—something approaching a Zen practice. So for this week’s #BigFitoftheDay theme, we turned to the hat, and to the stars who wear it best.
Leonardo DiCaprio
For his famous Today series, Japanese artist On Kawara painted the day’s date nearly 3,000 times, an act of endless and only marginally varied repetition. That’s perhaps the best frame of reference I can come up with for Leo DiCaprio’s hats: he’s almost never spotted without one, and they’re almost always different. A master of the form.
Denzel Washington
It literally does not get more classic than Denzel in a black leather jacket and Yankees cap. That’s it: that’s what “classic” means now.
Steven Spielberg
Lots of movie productions create branded gear for the cast and crew. Most of it is not this cool, and almost nobody thinks to wear it with a blazer to a red-carpet premiere.
Kristen Stewart
If you’re a seasoned K-Stew Big Fit Fan, you already know that she’s a Certified Ballcap Legend: she’s not wearing it in this photo, but her Outdoor Voices cap is legendary in some circles. Think of this as quar-core, only Stewart, naturally, invented it before we were all stuck at home. Don’t lie: you’re using a shoelace as a belt right now, aren’t you?
Diddy
We have nothing to add! Sometimes a graphic tee says it all.
