The Jackets To Take With You On A Night Out This Summer

The greatest conundrum of summer dressing is whether to take a jacket with you on a night out. As the seasons transition in Australia, you often have to master an outfit that can work for multiple climes. Fortunately, this season has a rather stylish solution to summer jackets. Satin and silk jackets are here to stay, evolving from lush winter coats into prim silk blazers and satin shell jackets for the summer months.

This trend is part of an outerwear shift towards luxe fabrics and finishes, a blend of vintage and contemporary style. When it comes to satin jackets, the brief is mixed. For coats and jackets, we’re drawing inspiration from retro satin duster coats and Tang jackets. For blazers, it’s 1960s box blazers and slim tailoring. Then there’s the continuation of the bomber jacket trend, which can look surprisingly chic over a LBD and thong heels.

Silk or satin jacket is the ultimate outfit elevator—instantly raising the aesthetic of jeans and a t-shirt to an illustrious look worthy of your trendiest bars and restaurants.

In winter, satin jackets were long and fur-trimmed, harking back to Mary-Kate Olsen at the 2013 Met Gala in a vintage Balmain silk coat.

As the seasons warmed in the northern hemisphere, we started to see celebs take their light silk jackets out to dinner. Take, for instance, Zoe Kravitz, who donned a blue Chinoiserie jacket by Conner Ives on a date night with Harry Styles. Meanwhile, Camille Charriere paired her very own Conner Ives with heeled boots and a mini. British It Girls, Alexa Chung and Tish Weinstock, are also rocking the trend.

Conner Ives, the British designer behind the viral ‘Protect The Dolls’ trend is leading the charge with his fur trimmed selection of long and short coats. The trend is also partially tied to the the resurgence of Tang jackets, led by Samuel Guì Yang, whose collaboration with Adidas propelled this ancient Chinese style into the 2020s. While these sporty jackets weren’t silk or satin, their original counterparts were traditionally silk brocade.

Further to the silk jacket trend, Chinoiserie-inspired silk fabrics are booming in popularity, as are brocade, jacquard and other textured silks that give the evoke images of extravagant luxury.

Joining the trend of silk taffeta pants, it really is the season to add some shine to your wardrobe.

For something more summer friendly, look to taffeta shell jackets, and satin cardigans and blazers lacking the padded lining and additional warmth of a good winter coat. This year at Copenhagen Fashion Week, women were donning silk blazers as their light and stylish outer layer.

While lustrous jackets aren’t exactly new, the present-day styles and structure are moving away from traditional oversized, collared blazers to collarless, cropped ones, flowing overcoats or, of course, the satin bomber jacket.

Satin and Silk Jackets, Coats and Outerwear

Look to Conner Ives for the most on-trend jackets of the season. While faux-fur trim might be excessive for the Australian, Ives and Carelli are also doing lighter, collarless silk jackets, over which you can layer stoles and scarves come winter. If you’re looking for something light to throw over your shoulders this summer, silk and satin button-ups and cardigans can be your next port of call.

Silk Blazers

Silk blazers in SS26 and into 2027 are taking a distinctly 1960s form, with minimal embellishments and a straight, boxy cut. Some of the more sculptural styles feature barrel arms and a cinched waist, with Tang-style jackets also gaining popularity. The style is perfect to wear with trousers and jeans, where the fitted jacket should sit just atop the waistline. Silk taffeta blazers will also be a godsend for wedding guests in need of a light jacket.
