A new statement pant has come to claim the throne for spring’s relaxed, inter-seasonal style – and they’re made of silk taffeta. Expanding on the relaxed, drawstring style trousers we’ve seen blossom into a reliable trend over the past few years, the silk taffeta pant is mimicking the easy, pull-up-and-go style but in a lush new fabric.
The result is flipped approach to ‘jeans and a cute top’. Instead, we’re seeing a new era of ‘a top and cute bottoms’: Basic tees, singlets and button-ups worn over skirts, shorts and trousers with a bit more flare.

Silk taffeta trousers have been endorsed internationally by brands like Simkhai, Donni and Chan Luu – all American designers with a contemporary New York or LA-edge. Locally, we’re seeing them at youthful Australian designer brands, like St Agni and Beare Park.
Taffeta is known for its structure and its sheen. Traditionally woven from silk, today you’ll also find versions made from nylon and other synthetic fibres.
The ELLE Edit: The Best Taffeta Pants 2026
- Best Overall: Chan Luu Techno Taffeta Barrel Pant, $391.46
- Best Day-to-Night: Aflalo Morocco Cotton and Silk-blend Habotai Pants, $1,135
- Best For The Office: Silk Adjustable Balloon Pants, $579
The style has a distinctly 90s to noughties appeal, thanks to its sheen and structure. (Looking back on 90s style icons, you can see how straight-leg trousers and nylon or silk skirts were styled for red carpets and daywear alike.) Though other recent pants trends have encouraged a flowy or wide-leg silhouette, silk taffeta pants allow for all the flash, without dragging hems and ironing fuss.
While we’re not quite ready to say goodbye to the bias-cut or palazzo-style silk trousers still hanging in our wardrobes (there’s room for both!), this latest trend is definitely an evolution of day-to-night wear that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Want to know how we’re wearing them? Scroll on.
