The government has confirmed that it will not be able to match existing European Union trade pacts with Japan in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
A document released on Thursday by the Department for Trade showed it was seeking to continue 40 trade deals currently covered by EU membership, before the UK’s scheduled departure from the block on 29 March.
However, it has ruled out being able continue a deal with Japan in time.
International trade secretary Liam Fox’s department wrote in the document: “It is unlikely that we will reach an agreement prior to exit day.”
