Besides her obvious ability to churn out pop hit after pop hit, if there’s one thing synonymous with Taylor Swift, it’s her signature red lipstick. But lately dedicated fans have spotted the singer out and about wearing an undisclosed shade of brown lipstick.
Swift was recently papped on a date night with her boyfriend Travis Kelce wearing the cinnamon-hued lipstick, at a Chiefs game, and she was sporting the same shade on the MTV Video Music Awards red carpet last week too.
Suffice to say, Taylor’s latest style evolution has resulted in a host of her fans moonlighting as professional sleuths in the pursuit of the lipstick in question. This is what the Swifties have uncovered so far…
What Lipstick Does Taylor Swift Wear?
To know what lipstick Taylor might be wearing in 2024, one must first look back to all of the lip shades that have come before.
In fact, Swift’s first dalliance with her signature red lip has been well documented thanks to the generosity of celebrity makeup artist and founder of Westman Atelier, Gucci Westman, who first introduced the singer to the classic lip look.
“I remember I was the first one to give her a red lip,” Westman told ELLE Australia. “It was for an Allure cover. She’d never worn a red lip. When the red lip happened, I had to get permission by her mum [Andrea Swift].”
Taylor’s management told the makeup artist at the time that ‘Taylor doesn’t do red’. But the Westman insisted: “I said, ‘Well, Taylor needs to try red’.”
According to the interview that accompanied the photoshoot, Swift loved the lipstick so much that Westman gifted her a tube of her own.
Although Westman can’t remember the exact shade she used on the singer, since then, Taylor’s been rumoured to wear a host of iconic red lipsticks through the years such as M.A.C.’s Retro Matte Lipstick in ‘Ruby Woo’ ($40 from M.A.C.), Pat McGrath Labs Liquilust Legendary Wear Lipstick in ‘Elson 4’ ($57 from Pat McGrath Labs), Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint Longwear Fluid Lip Colour in ‘Uncensored’ ($45 from Sephora), NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in ‘Dragon Girl’ ($44.63 from Amazon), and Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in ‘Always Red’ ($24 from Sephora).
Taylor Swift’s Brown Lipstick
Like the rest of us lipstick-wearing folk, Taylor is loyal to the brands that have proven to work for her in the past.
Her loyalty is understandable when you consider any lipstick in her collection has to contend with being papped on the regular, as well as being able to stand up to her vigorous performance schedule on tour.
1. Pat McGrath Labs Dramatique Mega Lip Pencil in ‘Nude Oasis’
TikToker Delaney Kalea AKA the girl who always cracks Taylor Swift’s lip combos has said in a recent video that all signs point to Pat McGrath Labs Dramatique Mega Lip Pencil in ‘Nude Oasis’ ($50 from Sephora).
“Of course it’s Pat McGrath, because why would it be anything else?,” she joked in the video. “Even though the lighting at the Chiefs game wasn’t the best, I really, really looked for undertone, finish, and the way that it lined her lip.”
“Another reason why I think it’s a chunky lip pencil, is because she’s known to love them,” explained Kalea, referencing NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in ‘Dragon Girl’ ($44.63 from Amazon).
2. Dior Rouge Dior Long Wear Refillable Lipstick in ‘314 Grand Bal Velvet Finish’
However, fellow TikToker Amy Skelton thinks that this might be a new era for Taylor’s lipstick collection after she spotted the singer’s makeup artist, Lorrie Turk, mention Dior via Instagram the day of the VMAs. After a thorough search of Dior’s lipstick selection, Skelton surmised that the lipstick Swift wore to the awards show was none other than Dior’s Rouge Dior Long Wear Refillable Lipstick in ‘314 Grand Bal Velvet Finish’ ($72 from Sephora).
3. A Custom Lip Combo
TikTok content creator, Sophdoeslife, impressed us the most when she managed to recreate the exact lip shade using a combination of products she already had in her makeup kit. She lined her lips with the classic M.A.C. Lip Pencil in ‘Spice’ ($40 from M.A.C.), applied the NARS Powermatte Lipstick in ‘Start Me Up’ ($56 from MECCA) as a longwearing base, and then layered Charlotte Tilbury’s Hot Lips 2 Lipstick in ‘Carina’s Star’ ($58 from Charlotte Tilbury) over the top.
Personally, our money’s on Pat McGrath given the makeup artist’s history with the popstar. Like hello, the mother of makeup named The Taylor-Made Lip Kit after her?! But we’re more than happy to be introduced to a hoard of new lipstick options in the process.
