Since its premiere back in 2019, Euphoria has seen several careers take off; Sydney Sweeney, Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and Hunter Schafer, just to name a few.
Another – albeit slightly more unexpected – breakout star to come from the series was the makeup, jumpstarting an edgy, sparkly revolution within the beauty world and rivalling the likes of a clean-girl aesthetic.
From Maddy’s razor-sharp wing to Jules’ glitter and gemstones, the show has no shortage of iconic looks that are brought to life by the creative mastermind and the show’s leading makeup artist Doniella Davy.
And with a third season in the works, the Emmy award-winning makeup artist is dusting off her makeup brushes and dampening her beauty sponge to take a seat in the makeup chair once more.
“Euphoria has been such a transformative project for me, and I can’t wait to dive back into the world of these characters,” Donni tells ELLE Australia.
“Every season brings new challenges and opportunities to explore makeup in ways that push the boundaries of what’s been done before. I’m eager to see where the story takes us next and how we can continue to use makeup as a powerful tool for storytelling.”
What Can We Expect From The Makeup In ‘Euphoria’ Season Three?
While filming is yet to officially begin (not until January 2025 at least) and the plot is still to be revealed, Donni is going into the new season with fresh eyes and an open mind.
“For this season, I’m particularly interested in exploring themes of transformation and duality, and how we can reflect those through the characters’ looks,” she says.
For the past two seasons, we saw the use of glitter, rhinestones and colour to expertly reflect each character’s psyche and traumas as their storylines played out on screen.
Although, with rumours that the third season won’t take place in a high school, exactly where the storyline will pick up remains to be seen. But Donni isn’t worried.
“Euphoria is such a visually rich show, and the makeup plays a crucial role in amplifying the storytelling. I always start by immersing myself in the script and the various characters’ emotional journeys,” she explains.
“I think about how the makeup can reflect their inner world – whether it’s through bold, dramatic looks that capture a moment of intense emotion, or more subtle choices that add depth to their character.”
Working closely with the director and sometimes even the cinematographer, Donni’s main priority is to ensure that the makeup not only complements but enhances the overall visual aesthetic of the show.
“I also work really closely with the cast to ensure that the makeup feels correctly motivated for their characters, rather than just because it ‘looks cool.’ The makeup becomes an extension of the character, helping to convey their story in a way that words or even actions sometimes can’t.”
It’s not hard to understand why the cinematics and cosmetics are so in tune, given Donni’s background in visual arts, which was a “natural, although slightly random”, progression into makeup.
“Makeup, to me, is just another medium to explore colour, texture, and emotion. My background in photography and fine arts has deeply influenced how I approach makeup – my love for colour, composition, juxtaposing textures, storytelling, and then how light and movement affect it all.”
It also helps to know exactly how the makeup will translate on camera, under various lighting, lens and angle scenarios, especially given Euphoria’s dark and gloomy nature.
How ‘Euphoria’ Influenced Donni’s Makeup Brand
An extension of her talents also includes her makeup brand Half Magic, now available in Mecca stores across Australia (and Beauty Bay online), to which she credits the show for having “unleashed the makeup beast” inside.
“The show has given me the freedom to explore makeup — on my own face (thanks to downtime during the pandemic) — in ways I never imagined, and that experimentation has definitely informed the products of Half Magic.”
Through her brand, Donni hopes to encourage people to have fun (instead of being intimidated) while they try out new makeup looks and products.
“Whether it’s through bold colours, unique textures, or unexpected application techniques, I want to keep challenging our customers to allow themselves to get outside the box and maybe even redefine their signature look, regardless of their age!”
Fans will certainly have the chance to experiment with brand-new looks when Euphoria finally releases its third season, which we hope to see air in late 2025 or early 2026.
