Writing on Instagram she shared: “I’ve been impatiently waiting to tell you that my brand new single, ‘Patient Zero’ will be out on September 25 (!!!!!!!!!!!!) and it’s available to pre-order now on my website for 24 hours.”

Swifties had realised something was brewing earlier in the week when Taylor Swift social media bios, and the lyrics to several Life of a Showgirl tracks on Spotify, had the letter “O” replaced with the number “0.” Shortly after, a countdown clock appeared on her official website.

Fans heading to the store can currently pre-order-limited edition physical releases of “Patient Zero” in multiple versions. And interestingly, while the roduce descriptions feature The Life of a Showgirl branding in the album’s distinct typeface, there is no explicit mention of “Patient Zero” being a bonus track or tied to an existing record. In the image posted to Instagram Swift leans back against a brick wall in a sleek black Khaite halter dress, a guarded expression on her face. The spare, grey-black colour palette feels far more remiscent of previous, darker albums like Reputation. The expression “Patient Zero” classically refers to the first person known to have contracted a infectious disease. Some are speculating it could be an album about fame, at 35, the newly-wed Swift is arguably at the height of hers. But, it all remains to be seen.
