If you’ve been waiting for Australia’s answer to Bridgerton infused with a fierce, unapologetically feminist spirit, Netflix has delivered right on schedule. The streaming giant’s highly anticipated six-part period drama adaptation of My Brilliant Career drops today, bringing one of our nation’s most iconic literary heroines into a vibrant, steamier new era.

Based on Miles Franklin’s seminal 1901 novel, My Brilliant Career follows Sybylla Melvyn, an irrepressible, wild-hearted young woman navigating the dusty plains of turn-of-the-century rural Australia. Pushed by her impoverished family toward high-society propriety, Sybylla fiercely resists the conventional path of marriage, determined instead to become a writer and control her own destiny. Enter Harry Beecham, a wealthy, charismatic local bachelor whose arrival throws Sybylla’s resolute independence into a delightfully chaotic spin.

The 1979 adaptation directed by Gillian Armstrong starring Judy Davis and Sam Neil became an instant cult classic that catapulted its leads to stardom and the new Netflix adaptation has a similarly charismatic cast. Rising star Philippa Northeast (Territory) steps into the shoes of the iconic Sybylla, bringing an electric, irreverent charm to the lead role. Opposite her, Slow Horses standout Christopher Chung plays Harry, bringing plenty of smouldering charisma as Sybylla’s swoonworthy love interest.

Packed with lavish South Australian backdrops, razor-sharp wit, and anachronistic soundtrack cues, this fresh reimagining is set to be your next binge-watching obsession.

Is My Brilliant Career A True Story?

While My Brilliant Career is technically a work of fiction, author Miles Franklin wrote the novel in 1899 when she was just 19 years old, drawing heavily on her own personal experiences growing up in the Australian bush.

Like her protagonist Sybylla, Franklin was a fiercely ambitious, free-thinking teenager who rebelled against societal pressures regarding marriage and traditional gender roles in rural New South Wales. The novel was so semi-autobiographical that when it was published in 1901, the local gossip and speculation surrounding who inspired which character caused Franklin so much distress that she requested the book be pulled from publication until after her death. While the characters and romantic beats are dramatised, Sybylla’s passionate fight for female independence was very much Miles Franklin’s own story.
