The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show made its “angels” models, such as Miranda Kerr, Adriana Lima, and Giselle Bündchen, household names. While the show was a promotional event for lingerie, it was also a celebrity event, with viewers tuning in to see their favourite stars.

Its last official broadcast was in 2018, and in 2019, the show was pulled following poor ratings and controversy around its lack of body diversity (the model’s extreme pre-runway diets were the stuff of legend) and racial diversity (the show’s most famous faces were Caucasian). However, there was also a steep decline in ratings, reflecting a broader cultural shift towards celebrity-designed lingerie like Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS, which launched in 2018, as did Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty lingerie brand, against a broader shift from consuming fashion news on free-to-air to social media platforms.

How Is The 2024 Victoria’s Secret Runway Show Different?

In May, Victoria’s Secret announced that the fashion show would return, “reflecting who we are today.” We’re assuming that will translate to more diversity on the runway. So far, we know Valentina Sampaio, the brand’s first openly transgender model, has confirmed she will be in the show. Veterans GiGi Hadid and Adriana Lima, who has modelled for the brand for two decades, will also be returning to the runway. Other familiar names include Barbara Palvin, Jasmine Tookes, body positivity activist and model Ashley Graham, Candice Swanepoel and Behati Prinsloo.

Cher headlined an all-female lineup, including South African singer Tyla and Thai singer and rapper Lisa.
