Warm up your voices, Glee is coming back, baby. In a post on Instagram, Disney+ announced that the beloved 2010s-era musical theatre-themed show will be returning to screens on Disney+ and Hulu, with original cast members Lea Michele (Rachel Berry), Heather Morris (Brittany Pierce) and Chord Overstreet (Sam Evans) reportedly reprising their roles in the reboot.
Rumblings about a potential reboot began in September, when Ryan Murphy, one of the show’s creators, teased that he had “just finished a script” in an interview on Entertainment Tonight. “Brad [Falchuk], Ian [Brennan] and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something,” he said. “I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members, and it’s very sweet, you know. They all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”

Glee, which originally aired on Fox in 2009, was nominated for 10 Golden Globes (winning four of them) over its six years on air, and remains one of the most emblematic shows of the time, tackling topics like toxic masculinity, sexuality, friendship and a slew of other social issues facing a motley crew of high schoolers in a show choir. It garnered legions of fans during its run, though it also garnered its fair share of criticism as seasons went on — in 2010, Boston Globe journalist Matthew Gilbert wrote that the show had become “a powerful, promotional machine, long on hype and short on the human feeling—the glee—that once made it so addictive.”
Nonetheless, fans were over the moon with the announcement of the show’s return, flooding the comments section of Disney+’s Instagram post with pleas for Idina Menzel (who played the recurring character Shelby Corcoran from 2010 to 2013) to reprise her role. Even Laufey got involved, commenting, “Ur kidding” on the post. Safe to say, people are excited.
Who Will Be In The Glee Reboot?
According to Variety, Lea Michele, who played the show’s fame-hungry yet misunderstood protagonist, Rachel Berry, will be reprising her role in the Glee reboot. Two sources who spoke to the publication said, “She’s in,” while another noted, “It’s still early-ish days, but it feels good and we’re happy to get the band back together.” So far, Michele has not commented on whether she will be returning for the reboot.
Alongside Michele, Heather Morris, who played ditzy cheerleader Brittany Pierce, posted a throwback shot of her in her character’s cheerleading costume on Instagram, which all but confirmed her return. The caption read, “Yes ladies and gentle men of women, rumours are true. Brittany S Pierce was in fact lost in the sewers for all these years. But I’m here to inform you that she is alive and well… And back for more.”

Chord Overstreet, who played footballer Sam Evans in the show, has also confirmed his return, posting on X “Reunited and it feels so good!”
In 2020, to celebrate the show’s 11th anniversary, Ryan Murphy posted on Instagram about having an idea to redo the show’s pilot with Lea Michele and actors Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein. The post was eventually deleted, but might Platt and Feldstein make an appearance in the reboot, we wonder?
Three of Glee‘s stars have tragically died. In 2013, Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, passed away due to an overdose aged 31. Mark Salling, who played Noah “Puck” Puckerman died of a suspected suicide in 2018, while in 2020, Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez on the show, drowned while on a boating excursion with her four-year-old son, managing to save him from what was believed to be a rip current but failing to board the boat herself.
When Will The Glee Reboot Be Released?
It might be confirmed, but as far as a release date for the Glee reboot goes, we’re in the dark. Murphy confirmed that the script was complete, but he didn’t offer any further details about production commencing, so for now, we’ll wait with bated breath.
