Australians Will Soon Need A Visa To Travel To Europe

Rarely is a holiday as spontaneous as we’d like, with plenty of packing, visa, and itinerary planning required before we step foot inside the airport. In order to get your ducks in a row, you’ll need to understand the entry requirements for your planned destination. Currently, Australians travelling to Europe are blessed with visa-free travel to most countries, enabling us to just rock up with our passports in tow. As of 2025, this will no longer the case.

The EU Schengen area—a collection of 27 nations, including the bulk of western Europe, banded together for tourism purposes—has introduced a visa, which you will now need to apply for and get approved before leaving Australia. Here’s what you need to know.

Do Australians Need A Visa To Travel To Europe?

Currently, Australians are able to enter Europe’s Schengen Area without a visa for 90 days in a 180 day period. However, from 2025, Australians will need an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) visa.

The ETIAS visa is only for tourists visiting for a short term period, and not for longer-term stays which will require other types of visas. You will need to apply online (or via the ETIAS app), and provide details of your valid passport, as well as a few health and security details. The ETIAS website assures us that “most” applications will then be processed “within minutes”, with successful applicants being notified via email. However, ETIAS encourages you apply at least 96 hours before your planned departure, you know, just in case!

The exact date of these changes is yet to be announced.

How Much Does The European Visa Cost For Australians?

When the ETIAS visa is implemented, it will cost Australians between the ages of 18 and 70 $12. Those outside those age ranges will have the fee waived.

How Long Is My ETIAS Visa Valid?

Once approved and purchased the visa will be automatically linked to your passport, and will be valid for up to three years. The general Schengen length-of-stay rules will still apply, i.e. you can visit the area for up to 90 days in a 180 day period. Once approved, the ETIAS can be used multiple times.
