THE RUNDOWN
- On Thursday, October 1, 2026 Daisy Edgar-Jones arrived in Sydney for the premiere of Sense and Sensibility sporting a natural-looking tan.
- Celebrity tanner James Harknett used affordable Australian brand Three Warriors to create her radiant look.
- Harknett advises considering your skin’s undertone when selecting the right fake tan, and prepping the skin well for smooth application.
Its a truth universally known that the best fake tans are unobtrusive. This is exactly what Daisy Edgar-Jones achieved on Thursday night on the Sydney Sense and Sensibility red carpet. Instead of an obvious faux glow, Jones arrived looking distinctly unlike the pale and wan Austen heroines of the Regency period.
At first glance, you wouldn’t guess tan was involved. Her complexion looked enviably warm, delivering a subtle radiance that complemented her sparkling custom Miu Miu gown without calling attention to itself at all (just like the best ladies in waiting). Ironically this imperceptible hue is exactly the kind of colour to get a glowing beauty editor’s review: one where you notice the overall affect rather than the tan itself. So we had to speak to the maestro behind it: James Harknett, the celebrity tanner who wielded Australian tanning brand Three Warriors to achieve Daisy’s look.
“With Daisy, it’s about bringing warmth to her skin rather than creating a dark tan that overshadows her look,” Harknett tells ELLE. “One of her makeup artists told me it provides the perfect base to work with.”
The secret to the natural result? Rather than using tan to make her look obviously bronzed, Harknett worked with Edgar-Jones’ existing skin tone, creating a seamless, polished finish across the face and body.

“The undertone of your tan plays a big part in creating an authentic glow, even on fair skin,” Harknett notes. “The warm olive and subtle violet tones in Three Warriors Professional Spray Tan Solution help counteract unwanted orange tones. I use a fine layering technique to build the colour gradually for a natural, more contoured finish. On her face, I turn down my spray gun and gently dust the spray over her skin to give just a touch of sun.”
These spray solutions aren’t just in-salon options or reserved for red carpet prep. You can grab a bottle for just $12 in the sample size (to test out the colour on your own skin) before securing the larger option. Based on the strength of Daisy’s look we’re thinking that an at-home tanning machine and a friendship based on a mutual understanding that spray tanning each other’s backs is a love language might be worth adopting as we head into summer.

How To Prepare Your Skin For A Natural-Looking Fake Tan
And if Edgar-Jones’ glow is our guide, this spray tan era might be defined by a little more restraint.
It’s an interesting proposition for anyone whose relationship with fake tan has historically involved the question, “How deep can I get this tan in the least amount of time?”. Because maybe that’s no longer the most interesting question. If we’re going to the effort of buying and applying fake tan, naturally, we want to see our hard work pay off. But Edgar-Jones is proof that a considered amount of colour, tailored to your individual colouring, can still be transformative in its own, much subtler way.
Naturally, achieving something that looks this natural requires a little more thought than slapping on a coat of one-shade-fits-all mousse the night before and hoping your elbows decide to work with you this time.
Preparation is part of it, and Harknett says Edgar-Jones has hers down. “Daisy’s prep is always on point. She arrives with clean, oil-free skin, takes a cool rinse before her treatment and smooths her skin with Three Warriors Tasmanian Sand Scrub.”
But his biggest piece of advice is simple: start slow. It’s much easier to add colour than take it away. “My advice for finding the right shade is to start light,” Harkness says.
If a spray-on solution isn’t your speed, there are other formulas that offer a natural finish, too. “Three Warriors Hydra Bronze Tan Drops are a great way to introduce a natural glow,” Harkness shares. “A few drops of Light to Medium mixed into your moisturiser or night cream add subtle colour and radiance while keeping the skin hydrated.”

Subtle, radiant and hydrated sum up Edgar-Jones’ result well, and we look forward to joining her in the subtle self-tan club.
