There are some major astrological events occurring this side of 2024, including a series of coinciding supermoons and eclipses. Between now and November, observers of the cosmos will be able to observe a series of supermoons—bigger and brighter full moons that amplify the energetic effects of a full moon. This will also coincide with eclipse season, which bring their own endings and beginnings to observe. So, how will ‘supermoon season’ affect you?
What Is A Supermoon?
A supermoon occurs when a full moon orbits closer to the earth—specifically, when it’s closer than 360,000kms from the earth. This phenomenon brings the moon about 21,000km closer than the moon’s usual distance from us, making it appear much bigger and brighter than usual—exactly 5.8% bigger and 12.8% brighter, according to Starwalk. Astrologers also believe the supermoon’s impact on us can be similarly intense. “It’s essentially supercharged, so it may be affecting your quality of sleep and energy levels,” Astrologer Kristy Gray explains.
When Are The 2024 Supermoons In Australia
We have four supermoons this year between August and November. The 2024 Supermoon dates are:
- August 19 – The Sturgeon Moon
- September 17-18 – The Harvest Moon
- October 17 – The Hunter’s Moon
- November 15 – The Beaver Moon
What Do The Supermoons Mean?
The August 19 Supermoon Meaning (Sturgeon Moon)
This full moon was all about change. Occurring in the sign of Aquarius, this moon was about discerning who and what to spend your energy on. However, astrologer Natasha Weber noted that this moon came with difficult energies and events that could change direction in the blink of an eye. Fun fact, this was also a ‘blue moon’, which describes the phenomenon of receiving two full moons in one calendar month. A blue moon happens once every 33 months, or once in around 2-3 years.
The September 17 Supermoon Meaning (Harvest Moon)
The September full moon in Pisces is a partial lunar eclipse. Eclipses, and full moons generally, tend to bring closure. Given Pisces is a water sign, you could see some deep movement in your emotional life, or along the themes of whichever ‘house’ Pisces occupies in your birth chart. Whatever the path, it may feel a little intense during this time of healing and release.
The partial eclipse also marks the first of a new eclipse season. The previous eclipses have occurred along the Aries-Libra axis (of which we’ll have one more after this Pisces moon). However, this is the first marking a new series of eclipses in the Pisces-Virgo region- of the sky. This Pisces eclipse is a taster of what could be happening in your life in 2025, when these eclipses continue.
“It’s a preview to what the next 18 months will be about, and that is going to be highlighting relationships, especially for people with Virgo or Pisces rising,” astrologer Emma Vidgen explains.
If you want an idea of what’s in store, consider what was going on in your life during the last Pisces eclipse, which occurred in September 2016.
The October 17 Supermoon Meaning (Hunter’s Moon)
The October full moon is in Aries, meaning it’s about being bold. However, despite an urge to act on your impulses, you may want to make a little pros and cons list before yielding to that wild fiery energy. This moon occurs opposite a sun in Libra, which could also cause some tension between being assertive (Aries energy) and striking compromise (Libra). Tread lightly, but trust your gut.
The November 15 Supermoon Meaning (Beaver Moon)
The final supermoon of the year is in the sign of Taurus, bringing a focus to our physical selves. You may find yourself feeling physically energised by this moon’s sensuous themes, and it’s a good time to show yourself some love and self care that nurtures your body. This is one of the more pleasurable astrological features, so be sure to tune-in to your physical needs and make some effort to indulge them.
So, there’s your supermoon season. But stay on your toes for the September-October eclipse season is just around the corner…
