“Let’s Make Sure That Real Change Is Happening—That It’s Not Just Clickbait.”

Growing Up, Coming Out is a series of personal reflections from queer American designers, released every day this month.

Some of my earliest memories from elementary school are just always carrying a notebook with me and sketching—I would draw images that I had seen in the magazines my mom had lying around. My mom and my sister have always been my biggest champions and encouraged me to be who I am. They helped me make clothes for the first time in high school, and helped me make a portfolio when I went to apply for fashion school.

The industry has evolved—brands are starting to work with models that look like me and my peers, and the people that we’ve cast for our shows have definitely left a mark; people are inspired by that. No Sesso is somewhat a queer brand, but that’s not all we are. Most of all, it’s about us doing what we want to do and creating looks for everyone. It’s about wanting to exist in a world where everyone can just dress and look how they please without being judged. 

A lot of people DM us or send us emails to say thank you for representing people like us. Sometimes it can be frustrating that all of this is coming so late, but it’s good that it’s coming at all—that models and designers from our community are being seen and heard. But now that people are hip to it, let’s make sure that real change is happening—that it’s not just clickbait.
