Given Millie Bobby Brown wore four different dresses throughout her nuptials to Jake Bongiovi (son of Jon Bon Jovi, in case you missed that), it’s fairly unsurprising she also had two engagement rings. The first ring was a decoy, used by Bongiovi to propose underwater when the couple went snorkelling, and the other was the actual engagement ring — a striking yellow diamond surrounded by a halo of white diamonds that once belonged to Brown’s mother.
Discussing the proposal on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Brown recounted how it all played out. “We’re many meters down. He gives me a shell, and I turn it over and it’s a ring.” She goes on to explain that after putting the ring on, she turned her hand around to show Bongiovi, only for the ring to fall off, causing Bongiovi to dive deeper beneath the water to retrieve it. It all sounds very dramatic. Nonetheless, when the couple made it back to dry land, Bongiovi presented Brown with the actual ring — an heirloom from Brown’s mother which she had given him to propose with.
Speaking to The Times, Brown said that she had “always loved that ring, it’s always stuck out to me, so she [Brown’s mother] gave it to Jake,” adding “I love that I can always keep a piece of my mum with me.” The ring taps into the heirloom, antique-style ring trend we’ve seen lately from the likes of Taylor Swift and Ellidy Pullin, whose bezel-set rings harken back to the popular style of the 1940s and ’50s. According to Liam Whittaker, founder of jeweller Heirest, “The centre stone looks to be a cushion-cut fancy yellow diamond, surrounded by a halo of white diamonds.” He adds, “The band appears to be either platinum or 18-karat white gold, with pavé-set white diamonds adding to the overall sparkle and presence of the ring.”
A cushion cut is often described as a pillow shape: rectangular with softened corners and rounded edges. It’s an evolution of the old mine cut — which Taylor Swift ignited feverish interest in with her minimum-eight-carat engagement ring — and has been one of the most popular cuts of diamond since the 18th century. Its prevalence wavered with the rise of the round brilliant cut (think the iconic Tiffany & Co. ring) but is falling back into favour with the rising interest in antique and vintage styles.

Judging by photos of the ring, Whittaker believes the centre stone, a yellow fancy diamond, is approximately 3.5-carats. The band is encrusted with pavé-set white diamonds, which would likely up the entire ring’s carat count slightly.
A fancy coloured diamond is fairly rare, making up roughly one percent of 10,000 carats of mined diamonds, while the term “fancy” refers to the intensity of the stone’s colour. “We’re seeing fancy yellow diamonds become increasingly popular,” Whittaker says. “As white lab-grown diamonds become more accessible, coloured stones offer people a way to create something that feels a little more distinctive and individual.”

“Assuming the diamonds are natural, I’d estimate a ring of this specification could sit somewhere in the ballpark of AUD $100,000–$150,000, although the final value would depend heavily on the exact grading and quality of the stones,” Whittaker posits. And given the ring’s heirloom status, we’re guessing the stones are natural. Whittaker shares that a similar style crafted from lab-grown diamonds would sit somewhere between AUD $7,000-10,000, depending on stone specifications.

If the engagement rings of the starry elite are anything to go by, yellow diamond engagement rings are well and truly having a moment. If you need more proof, jewellery brand Abelini recently analysed data that showed a major uptick in searches for coloured diamonds — a trend that began with yellow and pink diamonds years ago — with purple diamonds experiencing a 7050 percent year-on-year growth in search demand and orange and honey diamonds growing 5800 and 4289 percent respectively. Case closed.
What Is A Cushion Cut Diamond?
A cushion cut diamond is a style of stone we’re seeing more and more in engagement ring trends. It’s a diamond featuring a squared-off rectangular shape with soft, rounded corners (just like the pillow for which it is named). It is a style that has been heavily favoured during recent celebrity engagements. In 2024, Zendaya debuted her east-west cushion-cut diamond engagement ring from her husband, Tom Holland and in 2025, Travis Kelce proposed to Taylor Swift with a cushion-style old mine cut diamond. Most recently, Ellidy Pullin flashed a striking elongated cushion-cut ring when announcing her engagement to Brock Wadsworth. The ring certainly has an heirloom charm (whether it’s an heirloom or not) that aligns with the overall preference we’ve seen for antique-style settings and vintage diamonds. It seems like Millie and Jake were early adopters of this charming trend.
