Paul Mescal Loves Australia As Much As We Love Him

In cast you missed it, international heartthrob Paul Mescal has been in Sydney celebrating the premiere of his latest flick, Gladiator II. Such is our appetite for Paul, that over 2,000 people showed up for the screening in Sydney’s Darling Harbour, with fans lining the streets for a glimpse of its stars.

ELLE Australia managed to sit down with Mescal while he was in town, so we asked him what he thought of Australia. “Oh my god, I love it here. Last night, just the amount of people who came out to welcome the film at its first premiere was really special,” he shared. And if you were wondering what his first stop would be when he landed in Sydney, the answer is, of course, the beach.

“We got in yesterday and went swimming,” Mescal’s Gladiator II co-star Fred Hechinger revealed.  “Any day in salt water is a very special thing,” Hechinger continued, Paul nodding along, interjecting with the occasional utterance of approval. “It’s gorgeous. We really are grateful. I felt such kindness yesterday. It’s really special to be in Australia,” Hechinger added.

Opening the premiere screening of Gladiator II at the Darling Harbour theatre, Paul expressed his amazement at the turnout. In fact, he started his speech with: “I just want to say, this is absolutely, fucking mad.” The star walked the red carpet in a brown Gucci suit, stopping for interviews along the way.

This isn’t the first time Mescal has spent some time Down Under. The Irish actor spent 2022 filming Foe with Saoirse Ronan in regional Victoria and South Australia, and in 2021 he filmed Carmen in Sydney, Broken Hill and Goulburn.

Where Did Paul Mescal Visit In Sydney?

Shell House

Located in Sydney’s CBD, Shell House is a three-level bar and dining venue. There weren’t many reports of Mescal sightings, but one person did share a snap of Paul on Instagram. Popular among the after work crowd, Shell House’s Sky Bar offers $15 margaritas between 4 and 6pm.

Darling Harbour Theatre

Of course, this was the location of the Gladiator II premiere. Paul arrived in a black SUV before walking a red carpet and doing interviews along the way. The 2500-seat theatre is part of the refurbished ICC venue.

Why Is Paul Mescal In Australia

In October-November 2024, Mescal visiting Sydney, Australia to promote his the Ridley Scott-directed blockbuster Gladiator II. The film premiered on October 30, with Mescal attending the event in Sydney’s Darling Harbour.
