Over the weekend news broke that rapper Post Malone, real name Austin Richard Post, proposed to his stylist girlfriend Christy Lee with a breathtaking engagement ring. We love nothing more than a unique engagement ring with a sweet story attached, and this one had all the makings of a romance novel. 

The ring itself is a custom, natural oval diamond of around 20 carats in weight set on a delicate gold band. Like other celebrity beaus including Callum Turner and Travis Kelce, Post co-designed the ring with a jeweller. In this instance his long-time go-tos, Angel City Jewellers, to bring his vision to life. Isaac Bokhoor and Sam Tack have made several of Post’s most famous pieces, including his pink diamond Dallas Cowboys pendant and they shared a closer look at the diamond on their own social media, captioning it “20+ carats, immaculate stone.” 

According to Lee, who gave an exclusive interview to Vogue, Malone ran his own reconnaissance for months before he got down on one knee. “A couple of months before the proposal, [Austin] started casually slipping these very “hypothetical” questions about rings into conversation, trying to figure out what I liked without giving himself away,” she told the publication. “One day, completely out of the blue, he asked me, ‘Pear, heart, or cushion?’ I told him I’d always thought there was something so chic about an oval.” He’d also floated, off-hand, whether a ring could ever be too big. Lee said not a chance. 

The proposal itself took place at Post’s newly purchased Utah ranch, and by all accounts it was as elaborately planned as the ring itself. Lee arrived first to find a baby Highland cow, bunnies and chickens waiting for her, before an intimate dinner revealed her parents and closest friends had been flown in for the occasion. Post got down on one knee under a flower-covered arch, and by Lee’s account it was the most special night of her life. Lee said she was “speechless” when Post presented her with the diamond. “He had somehow taken all of those little conversations and created exactly what I would have chosen for myself.”

Toya Worsley of Lindelli jewellery estimates Christy Lee’s ring to be “upwards of 20 carats” but what makes it special is not its staggering size but its quality. “At this size, every characteristic of the diamond is amplified, so the cut and proportions become particularly important,” she explains to ELLE Australia noting that small flaws can become significant problems. It appears beautifully cut, with excellent light return and no obvious bow-tie or dark areas through the centre …something that can be quite pronounced in oval diamonds,” Worsley explains.

What Is The Cut Of Christy Lee’s Engagement Ring 

While the size is staggering, Nilesh Rakholia of Abelini jewellery says a few design decisions have been made to keep the ring balanced on Lee’s dainty hand. Firstly, the elongated cut gives elegant presence across the finger and the embellishment-free setting lets the diamond take centre stage. “There’s actually a confidence in that simplicity,” he says. “It would be very easy for a ring this size to become overly elaborate, but here the impact comes from the scale and proportions of the centre stone rather than how many additional diamonds have been added around it.” 

Worsley concurs that the cut is “very well judged.” “It has enough length to create that flattering, elongated silhouette on the hand without becoming overly narrow which is important with a diamond of this scale.”

How Much Did Post Malone And Christy Lee’s Engagement Ring Cost? 

Unsurprisingly, the price of a diamond of this size is pretty high. But experts say valuation can vary dramatically depending on the quality of the stone.

Rakholia says that very large diamonds can often sacrifice “elegance for sheer scale” and that the challenge for jewellers resides in finding a stone that contains light and brilliance, which becomes even more essential as the stone gets larger.

“A 15-20 carat natural diamond is rare in itself, but carat weight only tells you part of the story. Finding a stone at this size with exceptional colour, clarity and proportions is where things get interesting, and expensive.” The British jeweller says that, depending on specifications, the custom design could have cost between £1.5 million and £2.5 million or between AU $2.8 million and $4.7 million. Rakholia says that when diamonds enter this carat category, small differences in quality can mean huge variances in price.

How To Set A Large Diamond

Toya Worsley says balance is everything when it comes to working with large stones and in the case of Lee’s ring, the restrained design is what makes the piece. “The stone already has presence, so the setting doesn’t need to compete with it but it does need enough substance to feel proportionate,” says Worsley. She also says that while a fine band is elegant, “I would avoid pairing a diamond of this scale with a whisper-thin band”; instead “, a beautifully proportioned band gives the stone a visual foundation and makes the entire ring feel considered rather than simply oversized.”

She says that with larger stones, setting low to the finger is advisable. “The height of the setting, width of the hand, profile of the claws and how the diamond sits on the hand should all be considered together,” Worsley advises. “When the proportions are right, even a very large diamond can feel beautifully balanced and refined.” Ultimately, a larger stone only increases the importance of a skilled jeweller. “At this scale, craftsmanship is even more important. There is nowhere for poor proportions or finishes to hide!”

Why Personal Style Is The Biggest Trend In Jewellery 

Whether oval cut, old mine or trilogy, one thing that’s become clear in 2026 engagement ring trends is that personal style rules. “Post Malone has always had a very individual approach to jewellery,” Rakholia says. “He’s comfortable with pieces that have presence, but there’s usually personality behind them too.” He says a number of decisions have been made that keep the choice of carat tasteful. “The ring manages to be extravagant without becoming fussy,” he says. “You have all the drama in the centre stone while the rest of the design appears relatively clean.” 

As Lee said in interview, Post had prodded her about a more extravagant pavé band, asking her if she preferred diamonds wrapped around the centre stone. “I told him I actually preferred the opposite – something very simple with a delicate, thin gold band,” she said. 

Personal style has become more important as the synthetic diamond market grows and rings that feature stones of staggering size become more commonplace. In an interview with SBS, expert Paul Ziminsky estimated that lab-grown diamonds account for a third of the global diamond jewellery market. As with Taylor Swift and Devon Lee Carlson, celebrity grooms are increasingly proposing with unique antique-cut diamonds or yellow diamonds as rare, rather than simply large, jewels become a sign of exclusivity. Furthermore, as we’ve seen with Zendaya, Dua Lipa, Swift and now Lee’s engagement rings, and bespoke, thoughtfully designed settings that reflect the taste and personality of the wearer are more prized than ultra-specific details like carat count.

Ultimately, the triumph with Lee’s engagement ring is not the carat size and cost but the perfectly executed balance that complements her unique style and personality.
