What Is The Alpha Aurigids Meteor Shower?
Meteor showers occur when Earth’s atmosphere crosses the debris trail left by a passing comet. As particles of this space dust enter our atmosphere, friction causes the surrounding gases to burn, producing brilliant streaks of light across the sky. In the case of the Aurigids, their origin has an enigmatic visitor: Comet C/1911 N1 (Kiess). Unlike short-period comets that orbit the Sun every few years from the nearby Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune, Kiess is an elusive long-period comet with an astounding 2,000 year orbital journey. It originates from the mysterious Oort Cloud – a theoretical, icy shell of ancient planetesimals enveloping the outermost boundary of our solar system. The Oort Cloud is so unfathomably distant that human spacecraft like Voyager 1 won’t even reach its inner edge for another 300 years. Scientists actually only know of this primordial ghost-realm because long-period comets like Kiess occasionally plunge inward toward our Sun, leaving behind their ancient dust trails that Earth crosses once a year.
How Many Meteors Are In The Alpha Aurigids?
The Aurigids are classified as a “micro” meteor shower, typically yielding around 6 meteors per hour under dark skies. However, what they lack in volume they make up for in velocity. Aurigid meteors tear through Earth’s upper atmosphere at a blistering 66 to 67 kilometres per second. Historically, this shower has also produced unpredictable, intense outbursts. Because Earth traverses a very narrow thread of Comet Kiess’s ancient debris stream, an unexpected pocket of dust can briefly light up the sky with dozens of bright fireball over a 20-minute window before vanishing just as quickly. So, you never know; you might get lucky.

The Aurigids favour observers in the Northern Hemisphere, where the shower’s radiant (located in the constellation Auriga) climbs higher in the sky. For skywatchers in southern Australia, viewing will be virtually impossible due to the radiant remaining below or right at the horizon.
If you are located in northern Australia, your best chance to spot a fast-moving Aurigid streak occurs in the narrow pre-dawn window after the radiant clears the northern horizon and before morning twilight.

If you are trying your luck in the north, head to a dark-sky location away from city lights, position yourself so any moonlight is blocked by a tall structure or tree (conditions will be made more difficult by the August moon, which is waning gibbous) and watch the low northern horizon just before dawn.
