The Men Are Making Us Want To Dress Like Sexy Academics At Milan Fashion Week

Here at ELLE, we’re not ones to shy away from taking style inspiration from our favourite It-boys. And this week, internet boyfriends and designers alike have been working overtime in Milan serving up a distinctive flavour of geek-chic we’re slowly becoming obsessed with.

While it’s only January, Troye Sivan’s “librarian chic” look outside Prada has us taking fashion notes for Australia’s typically chaotic trans-seasonal period. Preppy collegiate fashion is due for a comeback in 2025 but Sivan brought a distinctive interpretation to the trend, balancing buttoned to the *top* prep with bohemian flavour that offers plenty of layering options.

Sivan was wearing Prada and layered a lightweight buttoned-to-the-top cardigan over a collared shirt. But, the addition of a thin, low-slung belt and Boby Dylan-esque oversized brown leather peacoat kept the look from feeling less schoolboy, more sexy academic from the 1960s. We could see him awash in sepia tones, perched mysteriously on a stoop, flipping through a paperback.

Current reigning Babygirl Harris Dickinson was also in attendance, looking like he was calling roll call. He wore a boxy leather jacket over slightly flared pants and delighted the internet with a glimpse of his gold chain through a sheer black knit. It was a true hot-for-teacher moment.

This isn’t the first time we’ve taken style inspiration from nerdy-looking It-boys. Back in October 2024, we noted Timothée Chalamet dashing about New York in pleated trousers, a white tank, a rumpled oversized button-down shirt, a thin leather belt, and a bowling bag while filming Josh Safdie’s project Martie Supreme. The movie is set in the 1950s, and we noted that Chalamet’s dishevelled, unbuttoned style was perfect for summer. We also have two film that draw on 50s and 60s aesthetics in 2025. Chalamet’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, an adaptation of beat author William Burrough’s novel of the same name.

We were excited to hear Guadagnino had called on the skill of Jonathan Anderson for the film’s wardrobe. And, images from the set show the kind of clash of 1950s buttoned-up style with counterculture aesthetics we’ve been so drawn to this season. See Drew Starkey’s pleated pants worn with a gauzy translucent pea-green button-up shirt.

It’s evident these cinematic aesthetics have filtered down to the runway. We’ve seen pleated pants, cardigans, and plenty of layers at Prada, Giorgio Armani and Zegna and all over the streets of Milan.

Last year, Saint Laurent proved that menswear will hold a lot of appeal for women in 2025 when they Bella Hadid and a coterie of models down the runway suited up. We’re here for fine tailoring in 2025, but we’re even bigger fansof this wearable approach to androgynous dressing.,
