Actor and comedian Russell Brand is facing “significant” time behind bars after a London court found him guilty of rape and sexual assault.

Following an eight-and-a-half-hour deliberation at Southwark Crown Court, a jury convicted the 51-year-old of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. The trial centred on allegations from six women in the United Kingdom regarding incidents that took place between 1999 and 2009.

For decades, Brand made light of his sexual exploits in sold-out comedy shows and blockbusters like Get Him To The Greek. But there was no comedy to be found in the scenes outside the court. As per the Times, Brand’s defence barrister, Ian Winter KC, launched a verbal attack on The Times Chief News Correspondent Rosamund Urwin, who was one of the first journalists to report the allegations against Brand.

Winter was reported to have said to Urwin, “I hope you’re pleased with yourself.” When she replied, “I’m pleased justice has been done,” Winter reportedly snapped back, “Well it wasn’t. You fucked it.”

Following the verdict, Brand was denied bail, which he had requested in order to see his children. Noting that the children are reportedly unaware of the trial, Judge Joel Bennathan said there was a possibility Brand might use the opportunity to flee. “I regret the hardship caused to the children of course, but the hardship has been caused by the serious criminal offending of their father,” Judge Bennathan said.

Inside the courtroom, Brand’s wife, Laura Brand—who was the only person to give evidence in his defence, describing their relationship as “honest, frank and clear”— wept in the public gallery.

During the trial, Brand’s personal assistant, Helen Berger, and a former roommate both testified against him. His own words were also used against him by prosecutors, who cited a passage from his 2007 memoir, My Booky Wook. “If I want something – whether it’s a job or a woman – I will determinedly, resolutely, remove anything that’s in the way, until I possess the object of my desire,” prosecutors read to the court. In recent years Brand has become a born-again-Christian influencer, denounced his sexually promiscuous lifestyle and spends his time broadcasting prayer videos and sermons to his 6.61 million YouTube subscribers. According to the ABC, the Metropolitan Police are currently investigating two more allegations of rape in the UK and there are two civil claims in process in the US. The head of Scotland Yard, Sir Mark Rowley told the publication he “wouldn’t be surprised” if more women came forward and has appealed to them to do so.

Below, everything you need to know about the case, including how long Brand is expected to go to prison for.

How Long Will Russell Brand Go to Prison?

Russell Brand’s formal sentence is expected to be handed down on Monday. Following Thursday’s guilty verdict, Judge Bennathan revoked Brand’s bail, stating the convictions would “inevitably” lead to “a significant custodial sentence.”

Under UK sentencing guidelines, the maximum punishment for rape is life in prison, though standard guidelines generally recommend terms between four and 19 years. Punishments for sexual assault carry a maximum of 10 years, with typical guidelines ranging from community orders up to seven years in prison.

The Allegations: What Was Russell Brand Found Guilty Of?

The guilty verdicts relate to four specific incidents:

  • Rape: A fan Brand met in 2009 following his Scandalous show at the Hammersmith Apollo. The court heard that following the show, he and the woman had consensual sex over a number of days, but Brand later performed another penetrative sexual act on her without her consent and refused to stop when she told him to.
  • Sexual Assault: A woman Brand assaulted at a birthday party in a London bar in 2004.
  • Sexual Assault: A woman he met at a radio station around the same time, whom he kissed and groped.
  • Sexual Assault: A woman he met working on a project with Channel 4 in 2009. The court heard Brand demanded a massage and pressed his face into her groin while they were recording an advertisement.

The Acquittals

Brand was acquitted of raping another woman in a hotel room during the Labour Party’s annual conference in the seaside town of Bournemouth in 1999. He was also acquitted of attempting to indecently assault a woman by dragging her into the men’s bathroom at the London office of MTV.

All six accusers gave evidence and were cross-examined from behind a screen in accordance with UK laws regarding lifelong anonymity. None of the women knew each other, and all came forward independently following a 2023 documentary, Russell Brand: In Plain Sight, which aired on Channel 4’s Dispatches alongside investigations published by The Sunday Times and The Times.

Those investigations contained allegations of emotional abuse, sexual misconduct, grooming, and controlling behaviour spanning from 1999 to 2009. The immediate fallout saw Brand dropped by his literary and talent agencies, while YouTube suspended the monetization of his highly lucrative channel.

Russell Brand’s Defence:

Brand, who was reportedly emotionless when the verdict was read, continues to deny all offences.

During the trial, his legal team argued he did not intend to have non-consensual sex. In his closing speech, Winter claimed journalists had “poisoned the well” against Brand, prompting people “who had not previously considered it to be appropriate to bring criminal allegations against him, to do so, very many years after.”

Winter argued that it was “not criminal to treat women unkindly before, during or after sex,” nor was it criminal to “be disrespectful, or be rude, or to behave like a crazy idiot.”

Using the 1999 complaint as an example, Winter pointed out that Brand had given the woman his email address. “You would have to be a psychopath” to be raping someone and “asking if they were enjoying it” at the same time, he told the court. “He left her his actual email address. Rapists do not give out their email address… Rapists do not leave their photographs. Rapists do not kiss their victims goodbye.”

In a leaked 2023 statement, Brand told police the allegations had been “invented or reimagined.”

“I’ve led a very promiscuous life in the past, which I’ve spent years openly denouncing; I’ve never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity,” he said.

Following the verdict, Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of London’s Metropolitan Police said the conviction was “a testament to the extraordinary courage, resilience and determination of the women who came forward and reported what happened to them.”

“Brand used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women,” Furphy said. “As his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement.”

Australian journalist Lisa Wilkinson, AM published to Instagram with a post that read: “The enormity of the successful conviction of rapist Russell Brand cannot be underestimated. This guy has been hiding in plain sight for years, as so many of these predators — often in positions of power and influence — do. Please hold a place in your heart today for the survivors who so bravely came forward and faced the court process with enormous dignity and conviction, and also for the journalists at Channel 4 UK who first brought these allegations to public attention.”
