Move over The Summer I Turned Pretty; we have another yearning-filled drama on our hands with Sterling Point. Millennial and zillennial television watchers’ infatuation with teen dramas is well documented—from Off Campus to The Summer I Turned Pretty. The generation raised on The O.C. and Gossip Girl is binge-streaming aesthetic summer romances while reapplying their SPF and vitamin A. Now, there’s another teen drama brought to us by the minds behind those 2000s classics with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage producing alongside writer-director Megan Park.

So, what is Sterling Point? The new Amazon series follows 17-year-old Annie (Ella Rubin), who inherits a remote lake island in Canada when her estranged grandfather dies. The type-A student’s future is upended when she’s rejected from a prestigious summer business program and, as she grapples with the loss of her mother, heads to the mysterious estate to dig up some family secrets. Sterling Point Plot And Reviews

Annie quickly falls in with a group of eclectic and well dressed teenagers with incredible heads of hair and sharp turns of phrase. As with any good YA drama, love triangles and yearning ensue, all in a picturesuqe location. The series is gaining critical as well as fan acclaim receiving Variety‘s “Critic’s Pick” (“A Breathtaking YA Series”) and accolades from The Guardian (“this teen drama from Gossip Girl’s creators is brilliant escapist TV”). This is in part thanks to its lead Ella Rubin, who is receiving comparisons to Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway and the accompanying cast who were encouraged to improvise on set giving the series a less polished and paint-by-numbers feel than some genre YA adaptations.

Sterling Point is a little grittier than previous entries in this category. There are jibes about Bessel van der Kolk’s The Body Keeps the Score (“I need to find out what the score is, and where in the body it’s being kept”), along with plenty of conversations about attachment styles and stick-and-poke tattoos. Its popularity is partly because it appeals to those for whom series like The Summer I Turned Pretty might feel too sickly sweet. Plus, the mystery surrounding the family and their fortune is gripping enough to keep even the most romance-averse viewer hooked. 

“Great teen dramas are just great dramas magnified by the lens of coming of age,” co-creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (The O.C., Gossip Girl) told Teen Vogue. “When you experience something for the first time — first love, first heartbreak, first best friend — it feels singular and monumental, like no one else has ever gone through this.
